Standing Calf Raise

Standing Calf Raise — demonstration
Calves

PrimarySecondaryNot worked

This movement mainly trains calves, and also recruits Hamstrings.

What the movement loads

With the knee straight, gastrocnemius is in full working position: it crosses the knee, and this is the only position where it is genuinely loaded. Soleus works underneath either way.

How to load it

Ten to twenty reps, with a pause at the bottom and one at the top. Calves respond to full range and tolerate bouncing badly, which sends most of the work to the tendon.

The recurring mistake

Bouncing out of the bottom on Achilles elasticity. Load travels through the tendon instead of the muscle, and a calf can train for years without changing.
